Tourism rates have only increased since 2022.

As of July 2026, the U.S. Department of State classifies El Salvador as “Level 1 - Exercise normal precautions“. Ranked at the lowest advisory level on a scale up to Level 4, this is ranked safer than many European countries, such as France, Spain, and Germany, all ranked at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution.” El Salvador currently registers as one of the safest countries on the continent.

While all travel comes with the risks of being in an unfamiliar place, El Salvador is a safe destination. The improved security has changed the environment to make tourism, events, culture, nightlife, and outdoor activities possible! Life is vibrant and peaceful. Families and friends gather for church, games, and after-dark activities like dancing!

It feels good to see El Salvador shine. The country is special. The people, the sights, and the warmth that defines El Salvador make your entire experience beautiful. Salvadoran culture is flourishing and inviting.

As with any destination, tourist areas, beaches, and volcanoes are generally welcoming to most visitors, but it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and follow local advice. Use your best judgment to avoid putting yourself in tricky situations.

Additionally, travelers with tattoos should be aware that some tattoos or symbols were historically used to identify gang membership. As a result, authorities may pay closer attention to markings that resemble known gang-related symbols or imagery and may ask about their meaning. This doesn't mean travelers should be concerned about having tattoos, but it's helpful to be aware of the context.

One last tip: As of December 2024, El Salvador has a zero-tolerance DUI law, meaning not one sip of alcohol can be in your body if you are operating vehicles on the roads. Drunk driving is absolutely no joke, and “a single beer could result in incarceration for up to five years.” The goal of the policy is to keep impaired drivers off the roads and make driving safer for everyone. Chero carefully partners with experienced, reputable local tour operators who have extensive knowledge of the destinations they serve. Our goal is to connect travelers with trusted experiences while providing helpful information so you can plan your trip with confidence.

There are many modes of transportation to take other than driving. Ubers and InDrive are readily available for any recreational activity, and traveling with Chero includes transportation for ease of travel and enjoyment of all activities.

In the year 2026, El Salvador is safe and welcoming for both locals and tourists. The opportunity to experience its culture, food, adventure, and growing tourism scene is not something to miss. It’s also famously known as the “Land of Volcanoes”; El Salvador is home to over 170 volcanoes for you to explore!
