What to Pack for a Trip to El Salvador

The spectacular country of El Salvador is made up of sunny beaches, towering volcanoes, tropical rain, and plenty of outdoor adventures, so one must be thoughtful in packing for a variety of activities!

The biggest thing to consider when packing is the time of year when you’re going. El Salvador has two main seasons: the rainy season, generally May through October, and the dry season, November through April. Luckily, both seasons are warm-weather and casual, so you already have everything you need in your closet! Think light, comfortable, and versatile pieces to keep up with whatever your itinerary has in store.

Here's what to bring for each season, along with a few essentials you'll want on hand no matter when you visit.

1) What to Pack for El Salvador During the Rainy Season (May-October)

Don’t let the rain scare you away! Traveling to El Salvador during the rainy season brings lush, green, beautiful scenery, and a lack of tourists certainly is a draw.

  • Lightweight, quick-drying clothes. Anything that dries quickly in the event that you are caught in a rainstorm.

  • A rain jacket or poncho

  • Extra socks… You can never have too many in the tropics!

  • Water-resistant shoes. Depending on your calling to the outdoors, anything ranging from hiking boots or sneakers to Chacos or another type of waterproof sandals.

  • Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, & bug spray

  • A swimsuit! The swimming is amazing year-round

Overall, pack light and give yourself options. Keep in mind that it’s still hot during the rainy season. Below is what I packed for a week in El Salvador during January!

2) What to Pack for El Salvador during The Dry Season (November-April)

The dry season in El Salvador is a popular time to visit, with warm weather and plenty of sunshine. Surfing at the beach is a huge activity during this season.

  • Swimsuits (possibly multiple) for swimming along the coastline or in a pool!

  • Sandals & sneakers

  • A hat, sunscreen & sunglasses! The sun will be out and bright :)

  • Lightweight clothing: breathable shirts, shorts, dresses, and comfortable pants or shorts

  • A reusable water bottle

  • A light layer

3) Activity-Specific Packing for El Salvador

What to pack for surfing endeavors -

If surfing in El Salvador is on your itinerary, you’ll definitely want board shorts or a surf-friendly swimsuit. Also consider packing a rash guard depending on the frequency you plan to be surfing. As with most sun and surf activities, reef-safe sunscreen and a waterproof bag will only add to the ease of your beach time.

You don't need to bring your own board, as there are plenty of places to rent one or arrange a surfing experience once you are there! Experience this and more with Chero Travel! We offer the perfect tour to explore Surf City at its best and delight in the incredible waves and vibrant surf town.

What to pack for hiking/adventure lovers -

If you’re planning to explore volcanoes, waterfalls, or hiking trails, bring comfortable hiking shoes or boots with good traction. Some trails can be rocky or slippery, particularly during the rainy season. You’ll also want to pack plenty of water for your adventure! Be sure to stop at a gas station and grab some before hitting the trails.

Booking with Chero Travel covers all of the unknown variables, like transportation to the best hiking sites and expert local guides. Our drives make sure you’re equipped with water and snacks on either end of your scenic hike. When you arrive at the hiking location, our amazing, experienced, and certified guides are there for you the entire way. 4) Every Day Travel Essentials for El Salvador

It’s not all about clothing when traveling internationally; here are additional items that are helpful to pack to make your travels easier!

  • Passport & travel documents

  • Phone and charger

  • Portable battery

  • Any necessary medications

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A small day bag

  • Camera

5) Money & Electricity - to Know Before You Go

El Salvador uses 110-volt AC electricity at 60 Hz, so travelers from the United States generally won't need a voltage converter. Type A and Type B plugs work, but check your electronics beforehand just in case!

The U.S. dollar is the official currency used in El Salvador, and cards are accepted at many hotels, restaurants, and businesses. We recommend carrying some cash or smaller bills with you for smaller purchases and places that may not accept cards. It makes things easier when you're grabbing a snack or shopping with local artisans!

ATMs are available throughout the country, making it easy to access cash when you need it. The Salvadoran Colón (SVC) and Bitcoin are also legal forms of currency, though the U.S. dollar is the most commonly used.

With so much to see and do, you’ll want to leave a little extra room in your suitcase—and your itinerary!—for every kind of adventure. And, of course, leave some space for a few souvenirs to bring a little piece of El Salvador home with you. Whether you’re hiking volcanoes, catching waves, or exploring local artisan shops, El Salvador offers something different around every corner.

Both the rainy and dry seasons have their own advantages, making El Salvador a destination you can enjoy year-round. With a little planning and the right essentials, you’ll be ready to make the most of your trip.
